The lost sandal of Lucius Valerius

A warning from the fog
A soldier on the road

In the year 175, Lucius Valerius, a Roman soldier, marched along the sandy roads of the area we now know as Katwijk. He wore the distinctive sandals of a Roman legionary, and his gaze swept over the vast landscape. The Meuse meandered slowly through the area, and although there was no stone bridge yet, there were wooden crossings that merchants and soldiers used to cross the river.

Lucius was on his way to a small settlement, where he had to keep the local population in check and collect taxes. He felt the fatigue in his legs, but his sense of duty kept him going. As he pressed his sandals into the cool mud of the river, he thought of the future. Perhaps a real bridge would one day rise here, one that would immortalize Roman rule.

The shadow in the mist

Suddenly, an icy scream rang out from the mist hanging over the water. Lucius stopped abruptly and peered in the direction of the sound. His hand gripped the hilt of his sword as his heart beat faster. Out of nowhere, a shadow loomed, a pale figure shrouded in a thin veil, her eyes empty and staring. "Go back," she whispered in a voice that resembled the wind itself. "Your camp needs you."

Lucius felt a sudden chill wash over him and took an awkward step backward. His sandal got stuck in the muddy bank and he lost his balance, landing with a thud in the water. When he hastily scrambled to his feet and looked at his feet, his sandal had vanished—as if the earth had swallowed him up. Defeated and distraught by what he had just seen, he dared not return to the place where the shadow stood. With only one sandal, he ran back to his camp, where chaos reigned.

A warning or a coincidence?

A fierce fire blazed between the tents; men shouted orders while others pulled the wounded away from the flames. The guards told him that an attack by barbarian tribes had ambushed them. Had the phantom saved him? Had his lost sandal brought him the warning his comrades needed?

Centuries later, in the 4th century AD, the bridge was indeed built, a robust stone structure spanning the Meuse. But deep in the ground, among the remains of ancient trade routes, a single sandal was left behind. A silent reminder of Lucius Valerius, the soldier who received a warning from the mist and whose lost sandal might well have changed history.

This sandal can be admired at the Museum Ceuclum in Cuijk – Free admission.
