The Legend of Helwig of Merwick
The lonely woman of Tongelaar Castle
Tucked away in the green heart of the Land van Cuijk lies Tongelaar Estate, a place where nature and history go hand in hand. This vast estate, with its ancient forests, winding paths, and imposing castle, breathes the atmosphere of bygone times. For centuries, people have lived, worked, and loved here. And one name keeps resurfacing in the stories told around the castle: Helwig van Merwick.
The woman between the walls of Tongelaar
Helwig van Merwick was born in 1423 and married William V, Lord of Tongelaar, in 1445. As a noblewoman, she led a life full of privileges, but also full of loneliness. While her husband occupied himself with administrative affairs and the defense of his country, Helwig spent her days on the estate. She walked along the paths beside the canals, immersed herself in books, and sought solace in nature.
It was said that she became interested in ancient knowledge and mystical practices, something that was viewed as suspicious and even witchcraft at the time. But was this really so dark, or were the stories exaggerated by people who did not understand her? Perhaps she was simply a woman seeking more knowledge, a way to give meaning to a life that was largely predetermined for her.
Natural death, or not...?
As William V grew older, he withdrew to Tongelaar more and more often. Servants noticed that the atmosphere in the castle changed: the once lively halls became quieter, the evenings longer. Not long after, William died, and although it was considered a natural death, the whispers did not stop.
Had Helwig had more influence on her husband than was thought? Or was it merely the imagination of the villagers, fueled by her reclusive lifestyle and her interest in elusive knowledge? There was never any official suspicion, but in the centuries that followed, the rumors lived on.
What is certain is that after Willem's death, Helwig spent increasingly more time in the castle chapel. According to some sources, she prayed there daily, as if struggling with a secret she could not share with anyone. Others claimed that she had actually found peace in her faith and in the estate that was her home.
A name that lives on
Helwig died in 1483 and was buried in peace. But her name did not disappear. Stories of her presence at Tongelaar still buzz. Not as a dark ghost, but as a phantom from the past – a woman who was far ahead of her time and perhaps not always understood.
Anyone walking across the Tongelaar Estate today feels the rich history in the old trees and the solid castle walls. And sometimes, when the sun is low and the wind rustles gently along the moats, it seems as if a waft of lavender spreads through the air—a scent claimed to have been Helwig’s favorite herb. Coincidence? Perhaps. But as with many stories at Tongelaar: sometimes a piece of history lingers longer than we think.
